Khvostov’s 19 points help Loko defeat VEF12.11.2017

On November 12th, Lokomotiv Kuban beat VEF Riga at home in the VTB United League – 83:70. The top scorer of Loko was Dmitry Khvostov – 19 points. Joe Ragland added 17 points, 2 rebounds, and 4 assists. Mardy Collins got 16 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists.

Loko started the game with 7-point scoring run. The Latvians tried to decrease the gap by outside shots, but in the mid of the first quarter, the score was 11:6 in favor of Loko. However, VEF managed to cut Loko’s advantage to 2 points. Mardy Collins made the buzzer beater and set the final score of the first period – 18:14.

In the second quarter, VEF played aggressively under the rim and netted some two-pointers. However, it was useless due to Collins and Ragland’s threes. Joe assisted Frank who made the dunk and Loko’s advantage grew to 10 points.

Loko didn’t lose the lead in the second half. VEF shot at least 7 threes in each period, 46 per cent. The downtown shots let the Riga team stay in the game. Elegar prevented any VEF cuts in the paint.

In the last period, Krasnodar played long offences, moved the ball on the perimeter, and won the game – 83:70.

Vladimir Ivlev, Forward of PBC Lokomotiv Kuban:

- It was a tough game. We didn’t succeed in some aspects. We could play more confidently but the result was determined in the fourth quarter. Then we more relaxed and won. VEF has a good team which has found its playing after a series of defeats and releasing some players. They attempted their shots successfully. They fought till the end.

Sasa Obradovic, Head Coach of PBC Lokomotiv Kuban:

- I’m satisfied with the win today. We controlled the result from the start to the end. But I’m not satisfied with our body language. We were softer than we should. Probably it was due to the travel to Belgrade. We didn’t focus on the game. We were lucky to play against the opponent who wasn’t very strong. We should improve and learn our mistakes. Big teams will punish us for that. We must show the best attitude in every game.

Janis Gailitis, Head Coach of VEF:

- I’m not satisfied with the defeat. But I’m glad that players showed their character and the best personal skills. As for the basketball, we always want more. Lokomotiv played very aggressive basketball, especially in defense. We were a bit slow today. Many turnovers influenced the result as well – 17. These are too many for us.
